Kanel is located in northern Senegal, where much of the land beyond the Senegal River basin is dry, rocky, and vulnerable to drought. Access to reliable water sources is a significant challenge, as wells and water towers must be drilled deeply to reach freshwater aquifers. This creates substantial barriers to agricultural development and food production.

For many women in Kanel, limited access to nutritious foods such as fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and beneficial spices has contributed to poor nutritional status and diets that are high in sodium. These dietary patterns increase the risk of hypertension and make it difficult for women already living with high blood pressure to effectively manage their condition. Without adequate nutrition and ongoing health support, women face an increased risk of serious complications, including stroke, heart disease, kidney disease, and other cardiovascular conditions.

Organizational Background

Since 2020, CELLAL has implemented a five-year sustainable health initiative focused on improving the health outcomes of a cohort of 150 women living with hypertension in Kanel. Through this program, CELLAL has provided access to blood pressure medications and health education focused on nutrition, physical activity, medication adherence, and lifestyle modifications.

Working in partnership with community health workers, volunteers, and local dispensary staff, the program has strengthened the community's capacity to monitor and manage hypertension while promoting preventive health practices.

Project Description

At the conclusion of this five-year initiative, CELLAL has successfully achieved a major milestone by purchasing agricultural land that will serve as the foundation for a sustainable, community-led food production program.

The agricultural project will enable women to grow locally adapted fruits, vegetables, grains, and spices, increasing access to nutritious foods that support cardiovascular health and help manage and prevent blood pressure complications. By addressing food insecurity and poor nutrition, the project seeks to tackle one of the root causes of chronic disease in the community.

While funding has already been secured for the purchase of the land, significant infrastructure investments are still needed to fully implement the project.

Funding Need

The most urgent challenge is access to water for irrigation. Due to the location and terrain of the agricultural site, a deep water tower and well system must be installed to provide a reliable and sustainable water source. The estimated cost of the water infrastructure exceeds $15,000.

Additional resources needed include:

  • Refrigeration units for food storage and preservation

  • A vehicle for transportation of produce, supplies, and equipment

  • Farming and gardening tools

  • Irrigation equipment and related agricultural supplies

These investments are critical to ensuring the project's long-term sustainability and productivity.

Goals and Objectives

Goal 1: Improve Women’s Health Outcomes

Objectives:

  • Increase access to nutritious, locally grown foods for 150 women and their families.

  • Support healthy dietary habits that contribute to blood pressure control.

  • Reduce the risk of hypertension-related complications through improved nutrition and health education.

Goal 2: Establish Sustainable Agricultural Production

Objectives:

  • Install a deep water tower and irrigation system to ensure year-round agricultural production.

  • Cultivate locally adapted fruits, vegetables, grains, and spices.

  • Develop community capacity to manage and sustain agricultural operations.

Goal 3: Strengthen Community Self-Sufficiency

Objectives:

  • Create a reliable source of healthy food within the community.

  • Generate opportunities for economic empowerment through agricultural production.

  • Build a sustainable model that can continue benefiting women and families beyond the life of the grant.

Expected Outcomes

With support from donors and funding partners, CELLAL expects to:

  • Improve nutritional status among participating women and their families.

  • Help women better manage hypertension and prevent blood pressure-related complications.

  • Increase local production of healthy foods.

  • Strengthen food security within the community.

  • Establish a sustainable agricultural system that supports health, economic stability, and community resilience.

CELLAL has spent the past five years building a foundation for improved health among women living with hypertension in Kanel, Senegal. The purchase of agricultural land represents a significant step toward a sustainable solution that addresses both food insecurity and chronic disease prevention. However, without access to water and essential agricultural infrastructure, the project's full potential cannot be realized.

We respectfully request support to fund the installation of a deep water tower and irrigation system, along with essential farming equipment, refrigeration, and transportation resources. This investment will enable women and their families to access healthier foods, manage and prevent blood pressure complications, and build a healthier and more sustainable future for their community.
